What will you be doing?

As a Carrier Sales Representative, you use the industry experience you already have to build, grow, and keep relationships between carriers and Wicker Park Logistics. Your job is to cover our freight with carriers who show up, run it right, and come back for the next load.

You will build and operate your own carrier portfolio. Our training and mentorship program gets you comfortable with the technology quickly, and you will keep adding to what you know about the transportation side as you go. This seat suits an experienced sales professional with real attention to detail and drive. Coverage on specialized freight is where you will earn your reputation here: bulk tanker, hazmat, food grade, temperature controlled. Those carriers are harder to find and worth far more once you have them.

Responsibilities

Build and run your carrier portfolio

• Develop your own book of carriers by lane, equipment type, and commodity, and go back to the ones who perform
• Recruit new carriers by phone every day, including on the specialized equipment our freight needs
• Qualify carriers to our standard: operating authority, insurance, safety scores, and the endorsements the freight requires

Cover the freight

• Cover daily loads and hit your coverage and margin targets
• Negotiate rates that work for the carrier and hold up for the customer
• Tender loads and confirm rates in writing, and make sure the carrier knows the commodity, the handling requirements, and the appointment before the truck rolls
• Track loads in transit, update status, and get ahead of a problem before the customer calls about it

Own the outcome

• Work breakdowns, delays, detention, and service failures through to resolution
• Keep carrier records, insurance dates, and load notes current and accurate in the TMS
• Hit the metrics you are given, and speak up early when a load or a lane is not going to work
• Join team meetings and training sessions, and pass along what is working in your lanes

What we are looking for

• One or more years of transportation or logistics experience
• A proven record of building accounts and carrier relationships
• The ability to work to a deadline and hit the metrics you are given
• Self motivated, with a record of resolving problems instead of passing them along
• High attention to detail and the ability to hold several loads in your head at once
• Strong written and verbal communication
• Comfort in a TMS and on load boards such as DAT and Truckstop
• Bachelor’s degree preferred, not required

• Multi modal freight experience
• Existing carrier relationships you can bring with you
• TMS experience

Location
Chicago, Illinois. This role is in office.

Schedule
Monday through Friday, standard business hours, with availability when freight is in transit.

Travel
Limited. Occasional carrier visits or industry events.
